## **INTRODUCTION**

Bir ismi tanımlayan sözcüğe sıfat _(adjective)_ denir: _a pretty girl, rainy weather,
hardworking_ _students, a _difficult_ question, etc._

Zarf _(adverb)_ ise öncelikle bir fiili tanımlayan sözcüktür: _speak ûuentfy, walk
slowly, cook well,_ _play badfy, etc._

Bir zarf bir sıfatı ya da başka bir zarfı da niteleyebilir: _very hot weather, an
extremely difficult_ _question, very fluently, unusually quickly, etc._

Zarflar genellikle sıfatın sonuna “-fy” ekinin getirilmesiyle oluşur: _serious/seriously,
bad/badly,_

_extreme/extremely, etc. _Ancak, sıfat ve zarf biçimi aynı olan sözcükler de vardır:_
fast, hard, late, early, etc._

Sonu “-ly” ile biten her sözcük zarf olmayabilir. _Friendly, lovely, elderly_ gibi
sözcükler, sonu “ty” ile bittiği halde sıfattır: _an elderly woman, a lovely day,
a friendly voice, etc._

Sıfat ve zarfın cümle içindeki görevi, kullanımları ve çeşitli sıfat ve zarf yapılan,
bu ünitemizin konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Şimdi bunları inceleyelim.

**7-1      ADJECTIVES**

 * Sıfat, bir sıfat tamlamasında _(adjective + a noun),_ ismin önünde yer alır ve
sayılabilir tekil isimlerle tamlamanın başında **a/an** kullanılır. Eğer sıfat
   sayılamayan bir ismi

_(water, weather, work, etc.) _ya da sayılabilir çoğul bir ismi (days,_ girls, students,
etc.) _tanımlıyorsa **a/an** kullanılmaz.

**7-2     THE ORDER OF ADJECTIVES**

 * Bazen bir ismi birden fazla sıfatla tanımlayabiliriz. Bu durumda sıfatlan belli
bir düzene göre sıralamamız gerekir. Bu konuda çeşitli kullanımlar bulunmasına
rağmen, dilde yerleşmiş biçimiyle en yaygın kullanılan dizim şöyledir:

 * size _(big, large, small, tall, short, long, etc.)_

 1. age _(young, old, etc.)_
 2. a. shape (round, _square, fat, slim, etc.)_
 3. a. colour _(white, black, green, etc.)_
 4. a. material _(plastic, cotton, wooden, woollen, etc.)_
 5. a. origin _(French, Russian, Turkish, etc.)_

a _small round_ table                         a _new woollen_ sweater

an _old wooden_ house                      an _expensive Swiss_ watch

a _tall thin_ man                                 a _tall young_ man

 * Eğer bu sıfatların dışında, _beautiful, nice, lovely, fine_ gibi duygularımızı
ifade eden sıfatlar varsa, bunlar sıralamanın en başında yer alır.

**a _lovely small wooden_ **house                       a **_nice old Turkish_**
song

young Russian_** scientist

 * **Pretty, **bir başka sıfatın önünde yer alıyorsa ve aralarında virgül yoksa,_“
   çok, oldukça”__(quite, very) _anlamına gelir.

Their daughter is a **_pretty tall_** girl, _(quite/very tall girl}_ Eğer _pretty“
hoş,_

_güzel’ _anlamındaysa iki sıfat arasında virgül kullanılır. Their daughter is a

**_pretty, tall _**girl/a_tall, pretty_girl.

 * Sıfatların bu dizimi, bir sıfat tamlaması içerisinde önemlidir. Eğer sıfatları,
tanımladıkları isimden sonra kullanıyorsak, bu sıra o kadar önemli değildir ve
iki sıfat arasında **“and”** kullanmak gerekir.

istanbul is **_big and noisy._** istanbul

is **_big, noisy and crowded._** She is

**_tall and thin. _**Their son is**_ clever_**

**_and obedient._**

 * Eğer bu sıfatlar, aynı nesnenin birbiriyle çelişen yönlerini tanımlıyorlarsa,
   arada **“but”** kullanmamız gerekir.

istanbul is **_nice but polluted._** Their son

is **_clever but disobedient._** She is very

**_pretty but a little short._**

**7-3**      **PRESENT AND PAST PARTICIPLES AS ADJECTIVES**

Present ve past participle, bir fiil kökünden türeyip cümle içinde sıfat görevinde
bulunan sözcüklerdir: _running water, an exciting story, stolen money, baked potato,

halini kullanarak elde edilir: _a damaged car, excited children, grilled chops,

His job bores him. (“bore” _cümlenin yüklemidir.)_

His job is _boring. (Onun işi sıkıcıdır.)_

**7-4     ADVERBS**

Genel olarak zarflar kendi aralarında çeşitli gruplara ayrılırlar. Bu grupları şöyle
sıralayabiliriz.

 * Manner: _slowly, gently, carefully, frankly, bravely, etc._

 * Place: _here, there, up, down, near, etc._
 * Time: _now, yesterday, tomorrow, still, yet, etc._
 * Frequency: _always, never, frequently, once, twice, etc._
 * Sentence: _actually, really, evidently, obviously, definitely, etc._
 * Degree: _very, quite, rather, fairly, hardly, scarcely, etc._
 * Focusing: just, _only, simply, even, also, etc._

Bu bölümde daha çok üzerinde duracağımız zarflar, durum bildiren (adverbs of manner),
derece bildiren (adverbs _of degree),_ cümleyi niteleyen (sentence _adverbs)_ ve
vurgulama yapan _(focusing_ _adverbs) _zarflardır.

**7-5      FORMING ADVERBS WITH -LY**

 * Pek çok durum ve derece zarfı, sıfatın sonuna “-ty” eklenmesiyle oluşur.

 * Bazı sıfatların sonu “-ty” ile biter: _cowardly, friendly, likely, lovely, elderly,
   lively, lonely,_ _silly, ugly._

Bu sözcükleri tek başına zarf olarak kullanamayız. Eğer bunlardan birini zarf görevinde
kullanmamız gerekiyorsa, _in a lovely voice, in a friendly manner, in_ a _cowardly
way_ gibi bir phrase (sözcük grubu) kullanabiliriz.

He is a _cowardly_ person. (adjective)

He acted _in a cowardly way. (adverbial phrase]_

İkinci cümledeki _“cowardly,_ “way” sözcüğünü tanımladığı için yine bir sıfattır.
Ancak _“in a_ _cowardly way _bir bütün olarak “act” eylemini tanımladığı için bir
zarftır.

Our neighbours are very friendly people, _(adjective)_

Our neighbours welcomed _us in a friendly way. (adverbial phrase)_

She has a _lovely_ voice, _(adjective)_

She spoke _to me in a lovely voice, (adverbial phrase)_

_7-6_       USE OF ADVERBS

 * Zarflar, öncelikle, bir eylemin nasıl yapıldığını ifade eden sözcüklerdir. Yani,

kişinin sağlığı hakkında bilgi ister.

 * How are you today?

kullanmalıyız. (Well, _sadece canlıların sağlık durumunu ifade ederken sıfat olarak

My brother is _harder-working_ than I am.

I am _more easy-going_ now than I was a few years ago. I am _easier-going_ now than
I was a few years ago.

Sonu -ty ile biten zarflar başına “more” alır.

_slowly-more slowly_          _quickly-more quickly_       _carefully-more carefully_

_easily-more easily_            _cleverly-more cleverly_    _comfortably-more comfortably_

Sonu -ly ile bitmeyen zarflardan fast, hard ve late, sonuna -er takısı alır. Ancak
often, more often biçiminde çekimlenir. Early ise, sonu -fy ile bittiği halde earlier
biçiminde çekimlenir.

_fast-faster_                           _often-more often_

_hard-harder_                       _early-earlier_

_late-later_

 * Karşılaştırma yapabilmek için iki öğeye ihtiyacımız vardır. İki insanı, iki nesneyi,
iki yeri vs. birbiriyle karşılaştırabiliriz. Karşılaştırılan öğelerden ikincisine
   geçerken arada “than” kullanılır.

istanbul is _bigger than_ Ankara.

Ayşe is _more beautiful than_ her sister.

Your house is larger than ours, (our _house)_

Her hair is _longer than_ mine, (my _hair]_

She is _taller than_ me.

He is driving _more carefully than_ you.

I find basketball _more enjoyable than_ volleyball.

Karşılaştırmayı yaparken, her iki nesnenin de tekil ya da her ikisinin de çoğul
olması gerekmez. Şu örneği inceleyelim:

**_istanbul _**is bigger**_ than all the other cities _**in Turkey.

Bu örnekte, _İstanbulu Türkiye’nin diğer bütün şehirleriyle_ karşılaştırdığımız
için, yine iki taraf vardır.

_Ayşe _is more hardworking_ **than all my other students.**_

_(Ayşe diğer bütün öğrencilerimden daha çalışkandır.)_

**_He _**drives more carefully**_ than his brothers._**

**_Some people _**are luckier**_ than others._**

Aynı nesnenin farklı zamanlardaki durumunu da karşılaştırabiliriz.

It is **_warmer_** today **_than_** it was yesterday.

_(Bugün hava dün olduğundan (dünkünden) daha sıcak.)_       _ÖR_

It was **_cooler_** yesterday **_than_** it is today.

_(Dün hava bugünkünden daha serindi.)_

_l _could run_ **longer** _distances when I was younger_ **than** _I can now.

She works **_harder_** this year **_than_** she did last year.

Last night, they treated us **_more sincerely than_** I had expected.

_(Dün akşam bize, umduğumdan daha samimi davrandılar.)_

I used to go to the cinema **_more often_** when I was at university **_than_**
I do now.

Comparative yapıyı, belirtili bir nesne için kullanıyorsak, önüne “the” gelir.

 * Which of those two is your English teacher?

 * **_The taller _**(of them) is my English teacher.Of these two apples, can I take**
   _the bigger_** one?

Aksi takdirde **“the”** kullanılmaz.

My English teacher is **_taller than_** yours.

This apple is **_bigger than_** that one.

 1. **Irregular Inflection of Adjectives and Adverbs**

Bazı sıfat ve zarfların çekimi, belirtilen kuralların dışındadır.

| _good (adj.)’/well (adv.)_ | _= better_ | _much_ | _= more_ |
| _bad (adj.)/badly (adv.)_ | = worse | _many_ | _= more_ |
| _far_ | = _farther/further_ | _little_ | _= less_ |

She is a _better_ driver than I thought.

She drove the car _better_ than I thought.

He is _better_ at mathematics than his sister, but he is _worse_ at physics.

He speaks English _worse_ than anybody else in the classroom.

Good, bad ve well sözcüklerini _“feel’_ ve _“get’_ fiilleriyle kullanırken belli
kısıtlamalar vardır.

“Well” in, sağlığımıza ilişkin konuşurken _“iyi”_ anlamında bir sıfat olduğunu görmüştük.

 * How are you today/How do you feel today?

 1. I am _well/l_ feel _well, (not “good’)_

Eğer, hasta birine _“İyileşinceye kadar yatmalısın.”_ demek istiyorsak, well ya
da onun comparative biçimi better kullanabiliriz, _(good_ kullanamayız.)

You must stay in bed until you feel _well/better._

Eğer hasta biri, _“Bugün kendimi kötü/daha kötü hissediyorum.”_ demek istiyorsa
bunu şöyle ifade edebiliriz.

I feel _worse_ today, _(not “bad’)_ “Feel good/bad”,

kişinin ruh halini ifade etmek için kullanılabilir.

I _feelgood, (happy, pleased, etc.)_

_I feel bad. (unhappy, displeased, etc.)_

Get fiilinden sonra good ve bad kullanılmaz. Bunların comparative biçimi better
ve worse kullanılır. “Get well” kullanımı da mümkündür.

She was very ill yesterday, but she _is getting better._

Your English _is getting better. (İngilizcen düzeliyor.)_

The economic situation _is getting worse. (Ekonomik durum kötüleşiyor.)_

I hope _you’ll get well_ soon. _(Umarım yakında iyileşirsin.)_

Nicelik sıfatı olarak much ve many “more” biçiminde çekimlenir. LttÜe’ın comparative
biçimi “less” dir. Few düzenlidir. “Fewer” biçiminde çekimlenir.

You have _little_ money, but I have _less. (I have less money than you.)_

I have _few_ books, but you have _fewer_ than me.

There were jfewer people at the demonstration yesterday than at the previous one.

(Dünkü _gösteride öncekinden daha az kişi vardı.)_

I think you have _more_ money than all of us.

I guess _more_ people will become unemployed in the days to come.

_(Sanırım önümüzdeki günlerde daha çok insan işsiz kalacak.)_

Zarf olarak much ve little’ın comparative biçimi yine more ve less’dir.

I drove the car _more than_ you did. I used to

read _more than_ I do now. She thinks very little,

but her sister thinks _less._

“More” gibi “less” de sıfat ve zarflan nitelemek için kullanılır.

This bed is _less comfortable than_ the one I slept in last night.

_(Bu yatak, dün akşam yattığım yataktan daha az rahat.)_

Bu cümleden çıkan sonuç _“yatakların ikisi de rahat, ama bu daha az rahat’Avc._
Eğer bu cümleyi _“more uncomfortable”_ ile ifade edersek anlam biraz değişir:

This bed is _more uncomfortable than_ the one I slept in last night.

_(Bu yatak, dün akşam yattığım yataktan daha rahatsız.)_

Bu cümleden çıkan sonuç ise _“Yatakların her ikisi de rahatsız ama bu daha rahatsıdır._

Both a Mercedes and a BMW are expensive cars, but a BMW is less _expensive_ _than
_a Mercedes.

My daughter is obviously _less good_ at maths _than_ my son.

Far iki şekilde comparative yapılır: farther ya da further. Eğer fer, “uzak” anlamında
kullanılıyorsa comparative biçimi farther ya da further olabilir.

Your house is _farther/further_ from the city centre than ours.

Further’ın bir anlamı da “more” demektir. Bu anlamda farther kullanılmaz.

I’ll let you know as soon as I get _further Information, (more information)_

_.  ‘\ -.–,.     . –_   _;_       _-:f^ __(v)-^.

OLDER AND ELDER

İki kişinin ya da iki nesnenin yaşlarını karşılaştınyorsak “older” kullanılır. _“
Abla, ağabey, büyük_ _amca vs.” _gibi aile bireylerinden, daha büyük olanını ifade
ediyorsak “elder” kullandır. “Than”kullanılan cümlelerde elder kullanılmaz; çünkü“
than” karşılaştırma yapar. Özellikle American English’te, elder yerine older kullanımı
çok yaygındır.

My _elder sister_ lives in Germany. _(Ablam Almanya’da oturuyor.)_

Her _elder brother_ doesn’t allow her to stay out late.

_(Ağabeyi, onun geç vakte kadar dışarıda kalmasına izin vermiyor.)_

I have two sisters. One is _older than_ me, and one is _younger._

.:,-                          Are you _older_ or _younger than_ your brother?

Older _“daha eskf_ anlamında da kullanılır.

;•                     Our apartment building is _older than_ all the others in
our street.

This car seems _older than_ the one we tried out yesterday, and I’d prefer to buy
the newer one.

 * İki nesneyi karşılaştırırken, bazı zarflarla karşdaştırmamn derecesini azaltabilir
ya da çoğaltabiliriz. Karşdaştırmalı bir sıfat ya da zarfı niteleyebilecek zarflar
   şunlardır: far,

much, a little, even, hardly, scarcely, almost, nearly, any, rather, (qm’te ve _fairly,_

comparative yapılarla kullanılmaz.)                                             .,..–,...

_(…. ama hiç de daha iyi değil.)_

Last night, I went to bed _rather earlier_ than usual.                   ^

(Dün _akşam, her zamankinden oldukça erken yattım.)_

 * Bir durumun sürekli değiştiğini vurgulamak için _comparative adjective_ ya da
_adverb_ çift kullanılabilir: _more and more, faster and faster, better and better,
   more and more_

_expensive, etc. _Örneklerde görüldüğü gibi, -er takısı alan sıfatların kendisi
çift söylenir.

Çok hecelilerde ise more yinelenir.                                   ,         ,.•

Everything is getting _more and more expensive._

_•;_          _,_       _(Her şey gittikçe pahalılaşıyor.)_

fl           Karşılaştırmalı yapıyı, iki durumun birbirine bağlı olarak değiştiğini
ifade etmek için de

kullanabiliriz.

_The harder _you work,_ the more successful _you will be._ (Ne kadar çok çalışırsan
o kadar başarılı olursun.)_

_The less _you eat,_ the more quickly _you’ll lose weight.

_(Ne kadar az yersen o kadar çabuk kilo verirsin.)_

_(İş zorlaştıkça ilgim azaldı.)_

_The more _he talked,_ the more _annoyed I became.

_(O konuştukça öfkem arttı.)_

Bu cümlelerdeki anlamı “as” kullanarak da verebiliriz.

As I grew _older,_ I became _more interested_ in music. _The_ _older _I grew,_ the
more Interested _I became in music._ (Büyüdükçe müziğe olan ilgim arttı.)_

As I waited there for him to come, I got _more and more impatient. The_ _longer
_I waited there for him to come,_ the more impatient _I got.

**7-16  COMPARISON WITH AS …. AS/THE SAME …. AS/DIFFERENT FROM**

 * Sıfat ve zarflarda karşılaştırma yapabileceğimiz diğer bir yapı as … as/so ….
as kalıbıdır. As …. as kalıbı olumlu cümlede kullanıldığında eşitlik bildirir
ve iki as arasında sıfatın ya da zarfın yalın hali kullanılır.

**as + adjective/adverb + as**

kadar__dikkatli kullanıyor.)_

Olumlu cümlede, karşılaştırılan öğeler yer değiştirdiğinde cümlenin anlamı değişmez.

Your house is _as large as_ ours.  _OR_         Our house is _as large as_ yours.

Ali is as _taO as_ Ayşe.                    _OR_         Ayşe is _as tall as_ Ali.

As + adjective/adverb + as, olumsuz cümlede kullanıldığında eşitsizlik olduğunu
vurgular.

_kesimde yaşamak büyük şehirlerde yaşamak kadar pahalı değil.)_

He doesn’t drive _as/so carefully as_ you. _(O_

_senin kadar dikkatli araba kullanmıyor.)_

Olumsuz cümlede karşılaştırılan öğeler yer değiştirdiğinde cümlenin anlamı değişir.
Bu nedenle, isimleri değiştirdiğimizde kullanılan sıfat ya da zarfı da değiştirmemiz
gerekir.

This exam _isn’t as/so difficult as_ the previous one.

_(Bu sınav önceki kadar zor değil.)_

The previous exam _wasn’t as/so easy as_ this one.

_(Önceki sınav bunun kadar kolay değildi.)_

As … as ya da so … as arasına sıfat ya da zarftan başka sözcükler de girebilir.
Karşılaştırılan öğelerden birincisine ait olan sözcükler ikinci as’a kadar yazılır.
İkinci as’den sonra yazılanlar ikinci öğeye aittir.

|   |
| _(Hiç onun kadar hevesli bir çocuk gördün mü?)_ | •-. |

bir daire almak istiyorum.)_

 * **Pronouns/nouns after “than”, “from” and “as”**

Than ve as’ den sonra fiil subject + verb biçiminde kullanılabilir. Eğer fiil kullanılmıyorsa,
object pronoun/noun (me, _him, you, Ayşe. etc.)_ kullanılır. From ve to’ dan sonra
subject + verb yapısı kullanılmaz. Noun/pronoun kullanılır.

**SPEAKING VOLUMES**

The music for the wedding reception of my wife’s nephew was being \ furnished by
a young group, who obviously believed that loud is good. At one point, I was standing
at the far end of the room, where the grandmother of the groom was trying unsuccessfully
to carry on a conversation with another woman. ^(/) Finally, in desperation, she
caught the eye of the bandleader and beckoned

him over. Shouting at the top of her voice, she asked, “CAN’T SOMETHING BE DONE
ABOUT THE VOLUME?”

With an apologetic smile, he shouted back, “I’M SORRY, MISSIS. WE CAN’T DO ANYTHING
MORE. IT’S TURNED UP AS HIGH AS IT WILL

GO!”                                    •               .

**7-17  SUPERLATIVE FORMS OF ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS**

 * Sıfat ve zarflarda en üstünlük derecesi “-est” takısı ve “most” sözcüğüyle ifade
edilir. “-est” ve “most” un kullanımıyla ilgili kurallar “-er” ve “more” için
   belirttiğimiz kurallarla aynıdır.

_pretty-prettier-prettiest big-bigger-biggest clever-cleverer-cleverest__

_expensive-more expensive-most expensive frequent-more frequent-most frequent pleased-
more pleased-most pleased__

_carefully-more carefully-most carefully easily-_

_more easily-most easily significantly-more_

_significantly-most significantly_

Sıfat ve zarf biçimi aynı olan sözcüklerin çekimi şöyledir:

_hard-harder-hardest_                      _late-later-latest_

_fast-faster-fastest_                             _early-earlier-earliest_

Late’in comparative ve superlative biçimi iki şekildedir:

_la te-la ter-la tes t_                           _late-la tter-las t_

_“Geç-daha geç-en geç” _anlamında “late-later-latest” kullanılır.

I usually get up _late._ My son gets up _later than_ me and my husband gets up

_the latest, (adverb)_

He usually gets home on a _late_ train, _(adj.)_

Can we travel on a _later_ train today? _(adj.)_

_The latest _train we can get direct to Adapazarı is the 10.30._ (adj.)_

Latest, “son moda, en son” anlamında _“most recent, up-to-date”_ ile eşanlamlı olarak
da kullanılır.

Everybody at the party was dressed in _the latest_ fashion.

_(Partideki herkes son moda giyinmişti.)_

Have you read his _latest_ book? (Onun

_en son kitabını okudun mu?)_

Latter sadece sıfat olarak kullanılır ve arka arkaya sözü edilen iki şeyden _“ikincisi,
sonuncusu”_ anlamındadır. İki şeyden _“birincisi, önceki’_ anlamında “former”* ile
birlikte sık kullanılır.

 * There are two films on at the same time. One is a thriller and the other is a
   romance.
 * I’d prefer to watch _the latter._ I’d find _the former_ too nerve-racking.

_(Ben ikincisini izlemeyi tercih ederim. Birincisini fazla sinir bozucu buluyorum.)_

Bu cümlede “latter” söyleniş sırasına göre ikinci sırada yer alan _“romance”_ yerine,“
former” ise birinci sırada yer alan _“thriller”_ yerine kullanılmıştır, _(former
= first, latter_ = second)

Last, sıfat ve zarf olarak kullanılır ve “first” ile zıt anlamlıdır.

I first went to Germany in 1973, and I last went there in 1986. (adv.)

_(Almanya’ya ilk olarak 1973’te, en son (son olarak) 1986’da gittim.)_

I will be the last person to leave the office. Who will be the first? (adj.)

_(Bürodan en son ayrılan kişi ben olacağım. Birinci/ilk ayrılan kim olacak?)_

Former”ın bir anlamı da _“eskf_ demektir: _in former times (eski zamanlarda), our
former teacher_ _(eski öğretmenimiz/önceki öğretmenimiz). _“Former” bir comparative
değildir, “-er”, sözcüğünyapısında vardır. “Formerly” bir zarftır ve _“eskiden,
önceleri’_ anlamındadır.

I _formerly_ worked as a secretary.

_(Eskiden/’Önceleri bir sekreter olarak çalışıyordum.)__

Düzensiz sıfat ve zarflar ise şu şekilde çekimlenir:

_good/well-better-best bad/badly-worse-worst far-farther/further-farthest/furthest__

_much-more-most little-less-least few-fewer-fewest (düzenlidir)__

 * Sıfat ve zarfların _superlative_ biçimi, bir kişi ya da nesnenin, belirtilen
özelliğe belli bir grubun içerisinde en üst ya da en alt düzeyde sahip olduğunu
ifade eder. _Superlative’in _önünde “the” kullanılır.

| She is the most _hardworking_ student in the classroom. |   |
| Istanbul is the _biggest_ city in Turkey. |   |
| Our apartment building is the _tallest_ in our street. |   |
| She has the most money among us. | ‘ |
| Ayşe has the least courage of them all.  ‘   • |
| She has the fewest _friends_ in the class. | •”. -••” |
| This problem is the least important (one) of all. |
| He is the _best_ player in the team. |   |
| He drives the most _carefully_ of all the drivers I know. |   |
| She speaks English the best of the three. | _..’•’-…-._ |
| _(Üçünün içinde İngilizceyi en iyi o konuşuyor.)_ |

 * Tanımladığımız öğenin hangi ortamda en _iyi, en kötü vs._ olduğunu belirtirken,
eğer bu ortam bir yer ise in kullanılır: _in the world, in Turkey, in our street,
etc._ Zaman ya da bir grup ifade eden sözcük ise of kullanılır: _the happiest
time of my life, the shortest_ _month of the year, the most hardworking one of
all my students, the most intelligent of us all, the most famous of all the Turkish
writers, etc. _Grup ifade eden yapılarla amongda kullanabiliriz: _the cleverest
among us, the laziest among my students, etc._

| Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. | ‘ | ‘ | _(–)vi |
| February is the shortest month of the year. | .: |   |   |
| Hande is the tallest of all my students. |   |   |

_Of all the contemporary writers, _I like him best.

 * _Superlative _kullanabilmemiz için tanımlayacağımız nesnenin ait olduğu grubun
en azüç öğeden oluşması gerekir. Eğer grup iki öğeden oluşuyorsa _comparative_
   kullanılır.

They have two daughters, and Ayşe is the cleverer _of the two._ They have three
sons, and Ali is the most _intelligent of the three._

Bazı durumlarda _comparative_ ile _superlative_ kullanımını ayırt etmek güç olabilir.
Şu iki örneği inceleyelim.

She is **_more hardworking than_** all the other students in the classroom. _(O_
_sınıftaki diğer bütün öğrencilerden daha çalışkandır.)_

She is **_the most hardworking_** of all the students in the classroom. _(O_ _sınıftaki
bütün öğrencilerin içinde en çalışkanıdır.)_

Bu örneklerden birincisinde, “she”, sınıftaki diğer öğrencilerin dışında tutulmuştur.
Yani bir tarafta “she”, bir tarafta **“diğer öğrenciler”** göz önüne alındığında,
iki öğeden oluşan bir karşılaştırma yapılmıştır. İkinci örnekte ise “she” grubun
bir üyesidir ve o grubun içinde “en _çalışkan” _olduğu ifade edilmiştir.

istanbul is **_bigger than_** all the other cities in Turkey.

Istanbul is **_the biggest_** city in Turkey.

I consider his latest book to be **_more successful than_** all his others. I consider
his latest book to be **_the most successful_** of all his books.

 * **More, most **ve** least, **fiilleri nitelemek için de kullanılır.

(Dövüş _sporları içinde en çok karateden nefret ederim.)_

**fl**           Bir superlative’in önünde, normalde **“the”** kullanıldığını görmüştük.
Ancak, _“his, my,_ _this, that’ _gibi başka bir sözcük kullanılıyorsa “the” kalkar.

**_His best _**book is his latest.

She is one of **_my most hardworking_** students.

 * **Oldest-eldest**

**Oldest **ve** eldest **arasındaki fark,** older **ve** elder **arasındaki fark
ile aynıdır. Eğer bir kişi ya danesnenin yaşça en büyük olduğunu ifade ediyorsak**
oldest,** aile bireylerinden en büyük olanını ifade ediyorsak **eldest** kullanılır.

**7-18  “TO + INFINITIVE” AFTER ADJECTIVE STRUCTURES**

Sıfat yapılarında **“to + infinitive”** kullanımını daha önce **“too”** ve **“enough”**
ile görmüştük. **“Too** + **infinitive” **kullanımı, özellikle “so”,** “such” ve
superlative **ile de mümkündür. Ancak** “too **+** infinitive” **in bu yapılarda
kullanılış biçimi ve cümleye kattığı anlam farklıdır.

 * **“Too” ve “enough” **ile kullanıldığında,** “to **+** infinitive” **_“…yapacak
kadar”_anlamım verirve neden-sonuç ilişkisinde sonucu ifade eder. “Too” ve “enough”
dan sonra sonucu ifade etmek için that-clause kullanamayız.

**Reason: **This text is too long.          **Effect: **I can’t translate it in
just two days.

**Reason: **This text isn’t short enough.          **Effect: **I can’t translate
it in just two days.

This text isn’t **short** **_enough_** (for me) **_to translate_** in just two days.

_(Bu metin, sadece iki günde çevirebileceğim kadar kısa değil.)_

 * **“So”, “such” ve superlative ile “to + infinitive” **kullanımında neden-sonuç
ilişkisikurulmaz. Sadece, tanımlanan isme bir nitelik eklenir. Bu yapılarda kullanılan**“
to** + **infinitive” **aslında, daha önce 6. ünitede incelediğimiz,** “noun +
   to infinitive” **kullanımıdır.

_(a nice person to work with)_

**She is such _a nice person to work wlthl_**

_(Müdürün teklifi, sorunun üstesinden gelmek için en iyi çözümdü.)_

Daha önce de gördüğümüz gibi, **“so”** ve **“such”** da neden-sonuç ilişkisinde
sonuç _that-clause_ ile ^(J)*ade edilir.

She is such a nice person to work with **that** **_everybody wants to work with
her_**

**_In the same project._**

This is such an interesting topic to work on **that** **_Pll choose It as my term
project._**

**7-19   LIKE, AS, SUCH AS**

 * **Like, **_“similar to, for example, the same as”_** **anlamını veren bir preposition’dır.
Bunedenle kendinden sonra bir _isim, zamir_ ya da _gerund_ gelebilir.

She is very beautiful indeed, **_like an angel,_** _(melek gibi]_ Work hard **_like
your father._** _(Baban gibi)_

This bed is too tough. Sleeping in it is **_tike sleeping_** on the floor.

_(Bu yatakta yatmak yerde yatmak gibi.)_

Do you have any other books **_like_** **this?** _(Bunun gibi başka kitapların var
mı?)_

Llke’dan sonra gerund’ı, **like someone/something doing** biçiminde de kullanabiliriz.

We heard a loud noise last night. It **_sounded like a bomb exploding._**

_(Bomba patlaması gibi geldi.)_

 * Do you hear a noise in the kitchen?

 * **Yes, **it** _sounds like the tap dripping._**

**Ltke’m bu **_“gibi”_** **anlamını** as **ile de verebiliriz. Ancak as’den sonra**
subject + verb **kullanılır.

Work hard **_like_** your father, _(baban gibi…)_

Work hard **_as your father does,_** _(babanın yaptığı gibi…)_

My son wants to be a teacher **_like me/as I am._**

Try to do it **_like this/as I show you._**

 1. **As + subject + verb **kalıbı farklı anlamlarda da kullanılabilir.

_(We were expecting this already.)_

**_As we all know, _**we’ll face terrible conditions on this expedition.

_(Hepimizin bildiği gibi,…)_

önce belirttiğimiz gibi],_** as (Is) known **_(bilindiği gibi),_** as (was) expected**_(
beklenildiği gibi),_** **ete. bu şekilde yaygın olarakkullanılan ifadelerdir.

Passive ifadeleri kısaltarak **as** + **past participle** ya da **as + verb be +
past participle** biçiminde kullanabiliriz.

**_As was mentioned _**before =**as_ mentioned _**before_(daha önce değinildiği
gibi)_

**_As has been illustrated _**above =_As** illustrated **_above

_(yakandaki örnekte görüldüğü gibi)_

 1. As’den sonra bir isim kullanılabilir: as _an accountant, as a study, as a hospital,
etc._ Bu kullanımıyla as ” ….. _olarak’_ anlamına gelir ve bir benzetme yapmaz,
    gerçek durumu yansıtır.

He works as an accountant in a big firm. _(Büyük_

_bir şirkette muhasebeci olarak çalışıyor.)_

She has been working as a teacher for nearly ten years.

The news that she had passed the exam came as a great surprise to me. _(It_ _really
was a surprise.)_

I’ve always regarded you **_as_** my closest friend.

_(Seni her zaman en yakın arkadaşım olarak görmüşümdür.)_

Like + a noun ile as + a noun arasındaki farkı şu örneklerde inceleyelim:

_As _your mother, I want you to be successful.

LUce your mother, I want you to be successful.

Bu cümlelerden birincisinde “as your mother”, _“Ben senin annenim ve annen olarak….._“

anlamına gelmektedir. İkincisinde ise “ilke your mother ….. “, “Annen _senin başarılı
olmanı_

_istiyor. Annen gibi, ben de senin başardı olmanı istiyorum.” _anlamım verir.

Yesterday, my son invited his classmates to our house to study together, and our
living room was _like_ a classroom, _(…sınıf gibfl (Oturma odası aslında sınıf_
_olmadı. Sadece sınıfa benzedi.)_

When there were more students than they had expected, they used the teachers’ room
_as_ a classroom, _(…sınıf olarak]_

_(Öğretmenler odası sınıfa dönüştürüldü ve gerçekten sınıf amacıyla kullanıldı.)_

 * Such as + noun, _“for example”_ anlamında kullanılır. Bu anlamda ilke da kullanabiliriz.

I like summer fruits, such _as_ peaches, melons and watermelons.

 * _like _peaches, melons and watermelons.

(Ben, _şeftali, kavun, karpuz gibi yaz meyvelerini severim.)_

Such as ve ilke bu anlamıyla, kullanılan genel bir ifadeyi örneklendirir. _(Yaz
meyvelerinin_ _ömeklendirilmesi gibi.) _Vereceğimiz örnek bir tane ya da birden
fazla olabilir.

Such … as, birbirinden ayrılabilir ve araya genellediğimiz isim girebilir. Şu örnekleri

inceleyelim:                                                                    ,

Some countries, such _as_ Turkey, are still dependent on agriculture economically.
