👑 GERMAN LANGUAGE (2ND GRADE) / UNIT 8: MY BODY (MEIN KÖRPER) 🦾

This study guide has been specially customized for English-speaking young learners in the 2nd grade. All grammatical comments are written in English, and words are equipped with easy-to-read pronunciation guidelines so children can learn correct German easily! 🌟

👤 SECTION 1: BODY PARTS & ARTICLES (MEIN KÖRPER UND DIE ORGANE)

In German, every body part has a fixed grammatical gender represented by its article (der, die, or das). To make memorizing them fun, we use a color-coding system:

• 🔵 Masculine (der) — Blue Color:
  • der Kopf [dair kopf] ➔ Head
  • der Mund [dair moont] ➔ Mouth
  • der Fuß [dair fooss] ➔ Foot
• 🔴 Feminine (die) — Red Color:
  • die Nase [dee nah-zeh] ➔ Nose

🏠 A) HOW TO SAY “MY” (POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS)

In German, the word for “my” changes depending on the gender of the body part. We use mein for masculine and neuter body parts, and meine (ending with an “e”) for feminine body parts:

• 🔵🟢 For Masculine (der) and Neuter (das) body parts ➔ Use mein [mine]:
  • der Kopf ➔ mein Kopf (my head)
  • der Mund ➔ mein Mund (my mouth)
  • der Fuß ➔ mein Fuß (my foot)
  • das Auge ➔ mein Auge (my eye)
  • das Ohr ➔ mein Ohr (my ear)
• 🔴 For Feminine (die) body parts ➔ Use meine [my-neh]:
  • die Nase ➔ meine Nase (my nose)
  • die Hand ➔ meine Hand (my hand)
  • die Schulter ➔ meine Schulter (my shoulder)

⚠️ B) THE SECRET CHANGE IN COMMANDS (AKKUSATIV EFFECT)

When the teacher commands you to move a specific body part (using Bewege… — Move/Wiggle…), if the body part is masculine (der), the possessive word gets an -en ending and becomes deinen (your). Feminine and neuter body parts do not change:

🎮 SECTION 6: IN-CLASS GAMES FOR GERMAN LEARNING (DIE LERNSPIELE)

1. “Kommando: Touch your head!” Game (Berühre deinen Kopf!)

The teacher commands students to stand up: “Steh auf!”. Then in a fast-paced tempo, the teacher calls out actions: “Berühre deine Nase!”, “Berühre dein Ohr!” (Touch your ear!). To trick the children, the teacher might say “Touch your nose!” but touch their own head instead. Students who make a mistake and follow the wrong visual action sit down using the command “Setz dich!”. The last standing student wins!

2. “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” Song

The teacher tells the class: “Sing mit!” (Sing along!). The class plays the fun, traditional movement song in German. Children touch their head (Kopf), shoulders (Schultern), and follow the rhythm. The song speeds up with each round, making the movements faster and more exciting!
