💡 Teacher’s Note: At 3rd-grade level, verb conjugation rules (Konjugation) should not be given through table memorization. While talking about hobbies, the possessive pattern (Mein Hobby ist…), the adverb structure (gern) indicating that we do an activity with pleasure, and the rhythm of the first-person singular verb ending “-e” should be made intuitive to children through games.

🎨 A) STRUCTURE FOR DOING AN ACTIVITY WITH PLEASURE (GERN)

In German, to express “I like painting” or “I like playing football,” the word “gern” [gern] is placed in the sentence. When the verb is conjugated for the first-person singular (Ich), it always takes the ending “-e”:

🧩 Formula: Ich + [Verb + e] + gern + [Object]

🟢 spielen ➔ Ich spiele + gern + Fußball. = Ich spiele gern Fußball. (I like playing football.)
🟢 hören ➔ Ich höre + gern + Musik. = Ich höre gern Musik. (I like listening to music.)
🟢 singen ➔ Ich singe + gern. = Ich singe gern. (I like singing.)

🎒 B) PATTERN FOR DEFINING A HOBBY AS A NOUN

When introducing an activity directly as our main hobby, we use the infinitive (original) form of the action as a noun, with its initial letter capitalized. In this pattern, because we are talking about a single hobby, the auxiliary verb “ist” is preferred:

🎮 5. DIE LERNSPIELE IM UNTERRICHT

“Das Hobbys-Pantomime” Game:

The teacher gives the class the command “Steh auf!” (Stand up) and calls a student to the board.
The teacher secretly whispers a hobby into the student’s ear (for example: Fahrrad fahren or schwimmen) and says “Spiel die Rolle!” (Play the role / Act it out without speaking).
The student turns to the class and, without speaking, imitates that hobby only with body movements as a pantomime.
The teacher asks the other children in the class, “Ratet mal! Was macht er/sie gern?” (Guess! What does he/she like doing?)
The students in the class make guesses in German such as “Ich spiele gern…” or “Er/Sie schwimmt gern!”
The student who guesses the correct hobby first comes to the board and becomes the new hobby imitator. Successful imitations are applauded together (Klatsch in die Hände!).
