🗺️ System 1: The German Alphabet and Pronunciation (Das Alphabet und die Laute)
The German alphabet has 26 standard letters, plus 3 special vowels with dots on top (Umlauts) and 1 special letter for the double “s” sound.

In German, some letters combine to create completely new sounds:

🗣️ System 3: How to Spell Words out Loud (Buchstabieren)
When we want to ask someone to spell their name or a word, we use these helpful questions and a simple formula:
1. Helpful Questions
- Buchstabiere, bitte! [booh-shtah-bee-reh, bit-teh] ➔ Spell, please! (Direct request)
- Wie buchstabiert man das? [vee booh-shtah-beert mun dus] ➔ How do you spell that? (General question using “man”)
2. The Spelling Formula “wie” (like)
To make it easy to understand letters over the phone or in class, children use this formula: [Letter] + wie + [Example Word]. The word wie means like / as:
- M wie Maus [emm vee mows] ➔ M like Mouse!
- A wie Apfel [ah vee up-fel] ➔ A like Apple!
- B wie Ball [beh vee bal] ➔ B like Ball!

✍️ System 5: Classroom Instructions (Klassenzimmer-Anweisungen)
When the teacher asks you to do things in class, you can act them out with these physical movements:
- ✍️ Schreib an die Tafel! [shripe un dee tah-fel] ➔ Write on the board! (Pretend to write with a chalk or marker)
- 🗣️ Sprich nach! [shprikh nahkh] ➔ Repeat after me! (Cup your hand around your ear to listen)

🎮 System 6: Educational Classroom Games (Lernspiele)
Have fun playing these games during class:
- The Flying Letter (Der Buchstabe fliegt): The teacher writes a big letter on the board (like B). The teacher says “Klatsch in die Hände!” (Clap your hands!). While you are clapping, the teacher shouts: “B wie…” (B like…). The whole class must shout “Ball!”. The fastest desk gets to go up and write their own letter.
- Body Letters (Körper-Buchstaben): The teacher says “Steh auf!” (Stand up!) to two students and whispers a letter in their ears (like A or T). Without speaking, the students must use their bodies together to form the shape of the letter. The other students look when the teacher says “Schau mal!” (Look!) and try to guess the German letter out loud.
