🦁 SECTION 1: ANIMAL NAMES & ARTICLES (GENUS UND ARTIKEL)
In German, every animal has a fixed grammatical gender represented by its article. To make memorizing them fun, we use a color-coding system:
- 🔵 Masculine (der) — Blue Color:
- der Hund [dair hoont] ➔ Dog
- der Fisch [dair fish] ➔ Fish
- der Löwe [dair lur-veh] ➔ Lion
- der Bär [dair bair] ➔ Bear
- der Elefant [dair eh-leh-fant] ➔ Elephant
- der Vogel [dair fo-gel] ➔ Bird
- 🔴 Feminine (die) — Red Color:
- die Katze [dee kat-tseh] ➔ Cat
- die Maus [dee mouse] ➔ Mouse
🛠️ SECTION 2: GRAMMAR LAB (DIE GRAMMATIK-WERKSTATT)
🤝 A) TALKING ABOUT LIKES (THE VERB MÖGEN AND PLURAL USAGE)
In German, when we want to say we like an animal in general, we always use the plural form of that animal. Watch how the words change:
- 🔹 die Katze (one cat) ➔ Katzen (cats)
- Ich mag Katzen. [ih mahk kat-tsen] ➔ I like cats.
- 🔹 der Hund (one dog) ➔ Hunde (dogs)
- Ich mag Hunde. [ih mahk hoon-deh] ➔ I like dogs.
❌ B) TALKING ABOUT DISLIKES (THE NEGATION WORD KEINE)
If we want to say we do not like a specific type of animal, we place the negation word keine (not any) in front of the plural word:
- 🟥 Katzen ➔ Ich mag keine Katzen. [ih mahk ky-neh kat-tsen] ➔ I don’t like cats.
- 🟥 Bären ➔ Ich mag keine Bären. [ih mahk ky-neh bair-en] ➔ I don’t like bears.

🎮 SECTION 6: IN-CLASS GAMES FOR GERMAN LEARNING (DIE LERNSPIELE)
1. “Animal Voices” Game (Tierstimmen im Zimmer)
The teacher commands students to close their eyes: “Augen zu!” [ow-gen tsoo!]. Then, the teacher walks to one student and whispers an animal name (e.g., die Katze). The student stands up and makes that animal’s sound: “Miau, miau!”. The teacher asks the class: “Wer ist das?” (Who is this?). The whole class calls out: “Das ist eine Katze!” [dus ist eyen-eh kat-tseh!]. The first student to guess correctly becomes the next voice actor.
2. “Move Like…” Game (Mach wie…)
The teacher calls out a fast action: “Steh auf!” [shtay owf!], followed by: “Flieg wie ein Vogel!” [fleeg vee eyen fo-gel!]. All students run around acting like birds. Suddenly, the teacher calls out: “Mach wie ein Bär!” [mahk vee eyen bair!]. The students must freeze and move heavy-footed like bears. The best actor gets high applause from the class: “Klatsch in die Hände!”.
