🛠️ German Food and Drinks Unit – Grammar Guide
💡 Note for the Teacher: When expressing food/drink preferences in this unit, the conjugations of the irregular verb essen (to eat) and the verb mögen (to like) should be introduced naturally as set phrases. Article agreement in negative sentences and stem changes in imperative sentences are intuitively highlighted using color codes (der = Blue, die = Red, das = Green).
🧀 A) The German Article System (Gender)
In German, every food and drink item you encounter in the kitchen has an unchanging grammatical gender (article). Let’s learn them using color codes:
🔵 der (Masculine – Blue): der Apfel (Apple), der Käse (Cheese), der Saft (Juice)
🔴 die (Feminine – Red): die Banane (Banana), die Pizza (Pizza), die Pasta (Pasta), die Milch (Milk)
🟢 das (Neutral – Green): das Brot (Bread)
❌ B) Expressing Dislike (kein / keine)
To say that you do not like or do not want a certain food item, use the negative word (kein / keine) that matches the noun’s article. The articles der and das share the same form in this structure:
🔹 For der and das articles ➔ kein[kine](No / None / Not any)
- der Käse ➔ Ich mag kein Käse. (I don’t like cheese.)
- das Brot ➔ Ich mag kein Brot. (I don’t like bread.)
🔸 For die article ➔ keine[kine-uh](No / None / Not any)
- die Pasta ➔ Ich mag keine Pasta. (I don’t like pasta.)
⚠️ C) Imperative Sentences & Object Changes (Akkusativ)
When a teacher commands someone to eat something in class, the verb essen changes its stem and becomes “Iss…”. If the food item you are told to eat has a der article, it changes into the direct object form (Accusative Case), and ein becomes “einen”:
🔵 der Apfel ➔ Iss ein + en Apfel! ➔ Iss einen Apfel
🔴 die Banane ➔ Zeig mir die Banane!(Show me the banana! – the article ‘die’ stays exactly the same)

🎮 Educational Classroom Games (Die Lernspiele im Unterricht)
“Der magische Kellner” (The Magic Waiter) Game:
- The teacher places a restaurant tray on the desk and lays out flashcards with pictures of various food and drink items (Apfel, Banane, Brot, Käse, Pizza, Milch, Saft).
- One student is chosen as the waiter and another as the customer. They are called to the front of the classroom (“Geh an die Tafel!”).
- The waiter holds up the tray and asks: “Was isst du gern?” or “Magst du Pizza?”
- The customer acts out a response: “Ja, ich mag Pizza. Das ist lecker!” or “Ich esse gern Bananen.”
- The waiter must find the correct food or drink card on the tray, hands it over to the customer, and says: “Bitte sehr!” (Here you go!)
- Once the pair successfully matches the card, the rest of the class gives them a big round of applause (Klatsch in die Hände!) and they return to their seats (Setz dich!). The game then continues with a new pair of children.
